Katie L. | Dragonfly Hot Yoga Madison WI

How did you get started at Dfly?
I’ve been coming to Dragonfly for probably 10 years now, but I was always on and off. Then about 2 years ago I became a full-fledged member and got consistent. After having kids, hot yoga felt especially peaceful. Dragonfly has always been the first place I go to when I’m looking to initiate healthier habits.

What was your yoga/barre experience before Dfly?
Growing up my mom was big into yoga. She practiced Iyengar, so she would spend about 10 minutes just in mountain pose and I’d always be bugging her during her practice. But as I got older I became more familiar and started enjoying it for myself. Then Barre I knew nothing about until I got pregnant with my daughter. And Lindsey kicked my butt for about 9 months straight. It’s a great community in the barre room, and the workout is such a great compliment to yoga.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
It’s just so fun. I don’t know if it’s the crazy kids at home, or what, but this is the first time in my life when I’m so excited for a sweat session. I love to see what the teachers put together and what little nuances are going to be new and challenging. Also, I swear only nice people practice yoga.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
Yes, big time. I’ve lost a little over 50lbs over the last two years. Becoming a mom changed everything, I wanted to be healthier for my son and now for my daughter as well. Whenever I leave my kids with grandma or anyone so I can come to Dragonfly I tell them “Mama’s got to get strong so I can keep up with you!”. I’ve incorporated more than just yoga to accomplish the weight loss, but the yoga keeps it fun.

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I aim for 3 classes per week, and love the variety from different teachers. I really like power flow. I enjoy all classes, but my body and mind seem to experience the most new things in power flow, which is the goal.

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
I feel like Dragonfly is such a staple. I see the bumper stickers everywhere! And I’m always so impressed by how many people show up to each class. My husband and I have two kids, August 2.5 years and Winona 1 year, and I’m home with them most of the time. I also have 2 dogs Effie a saint Bernard, and Sonny a golden retriever.

Instructor Morgan Hunter: “Katie is a dedicated and strong yogi. She experiments in her asanas and envelopes herself in meditation. She has a welcoming presence, going out of her way to share a smile. I’m honored to nominate her for yogi of the month.”
